June 21/22 Munster Championships U/14 to U/19.
The Munster Track and Field Championships were held in
Waterford for the U/14 to U/19 age groups on the 20th and 21st June last. Weather conditions were extremely warm
especially on Saturday for the track events. However the Cork clubs did very
well featuring very strongly in both the track and field events; a lot of our
athletes qualified to compete in the All Irelands and even two championship
bests in G/15 Shot and B/14 High Jump were achieved!
Girls U/14-Track Events
The West Muskerry Girls team won bronze medals in the
relay when they came in third place. Grace McKenzie of Belgooly AC
came 4th in the 75m Hurdles in a time of 12.99. Emma O' Brien of Leevale finished strongly in
the 200m ahead of Emma O' Donnell of Dooneen AC to take the silver medal. Aisling Everard of Bandon AC did very well in
the finishing 3rd in the 1500m in a time of 5.20.29. She narrowly missed out on qualification in
the 800m coming in 5th.
Girls U/14 Field Events
Grace McKenzie of Belgooly AC had a magnificent
championship winning two individual medals and qualifying in three events, She won Gold in the High Jump with an
excellent clearance of 1.43m beating Kate Daniels of Ferrybank. She came 3rd in the Long Jump jumping 4.59m
narrowly pipped by Dooneen AC for the silver medal. Midleton AC and Bandon AC dominated the
throwing events. Aideen Hallaghan of
Midleton AC won the Shot competition with a big throw of 11.22m nearly a meter
ahead of the Carrick-on Suir athlete.
Fiona Duggan of Bandon AC came 4th in the same competition with her
throw of 9.72m. Fiona also came 4th in
the Discus event throwing 23.13m and 4th in the Hammer with a throw of 20.83m. Aideen Hallahan came 2nd in the Discus with
her throw of 24.45m. Well done to these
girls for doing so well.
Boys 14 - Track Events
The Cork lads excelled in the track events and won six
qualifying places in the All Irelands under very strong competition. In the 80m final on Sunday 21st Darren Lee of
Leevale got an excellent start and finished in strong 2nd position in a time of
10.32 behind M. Babatu of Tramore AC. Cian Greene of Youghal AC came 4th. Darren Lee and Cian Greene both featured in
the 200m the previous day; Cian Greene came 2nd in a time of 26.98 and Darren
came 3rd in a time of 27.81. Ross
Donovan of Youghal AC also had a great run in the 800m finishing in 4th place
in a time of 2.22.60 thus also qualifying for the All Irelands. Alan Ring from Togher AC came 4th in the
1500m. The Youghal AC Relay team which
included Cian, Ross, Adam Malone and Daniel Smiddy finished in 3rd position.
Boys 14 - Field Events
Adam McCarthy of Youghal AC came 4th in his first Munster
competion in the Discus with his best throw of 22.64m. Colm Kingston of Bandon AC had a good win in
the Hammer with a huge throw of 36.06m 3 meters ahead of the rest of the
field. Shane O' Neill of Carbery
Harriers had a good win in the javelin throwing 25.15m and Jamie O' Connor of
BIAC came 4th with a throw of 25.15m which placings saw both of these lads
qualifying. Colm Kingston of Bandon AC
also had another fine throw of 13.70m to the Shot title. Shane O' Neill came 2nd in the Shot with his
throw of 9.93m. David Cussen of Old
Abbey won the Long Jump with his best jump of 5.12m and Daniel Smiddy of
Youghal AC came 3rd jumping 4.71m. David
Cussen of Old Abbey also gave a remarkable display in the High Jump not only
winning the Munster title but also achieving a CBP of 1.62m. Well done lads - there were some excellent
performances and achievements. It was
also great to see 2 Cork athletes in the top 4 positions in so many events!
Girls 15 - Track Events
Grange-Fermoy dominated from the Cork clubs in these
events with Aileen Hurley winning two bronze medals in the 80mh in a time of
13.06 and in the 250mh in a time of 39.58.
Christina McGrath a;sp came 4th in the 250mh in a time of 40.11
Girls 15 - Field Events
The Bandon and Youghal girls featured strongly in the
throwing events. Laura McSweeney of
Bandon AC had an excellent championship.
She won the Shot title and also achieved a CBP of 12.65m. She won the Hammer with a throw of 32.57m and
came 3rd in the Discus throwing 29.63m.
Isobel O' Mahoney of Youghal AC came 4th in the Shot with her throw of
10.15m and 4th in the Hammer event throwing 27.08m. Well done to Grange-Fermoy, Bandon and
Youghal girls!
Boys 15 - Track Events
Matthew Ahern-Ford of Abbey Striders had great
performances in the 80mh and the 100m winning himself 2 silver medals. His time in the 80mh was 12.95 and 12.04 in
the 100m. Oisin Sedgwick of Bandon AC
came 4th in the 100m in a time of 12.37.
Robert O' Halloran of Leevale AC also had two 2nd placings in the 200m
in a time of 25.24 and a time of 36.09 in the 250mh. Eoin Burke of Togher AC came 4th in the 800m
in a time of 2.18.33 and Jake Ingles of Dohenys AC came 4th in the 1500m in a
time of 4.44.92. Togher AC had another
competitor Conor Cronin finishing 4th in the 2000m walk. Leevale AC won the relay in a time of 49.62.
Boys15 - Field Events
Fanahan McSweeney AC, BIAC and Bandon AC featured in the
throwing events. Gary McCarthy of
FMcSweeney came 3rd in the Discus throwing 30.39m; he came 2nd in the Hammer
throwing 33.13m. Colm Dennehy of BIAC
came 3rd in the Hammer with his best throw of 24.18m. Robert O' Sullivan of Bandon AC came 3rd in
the javelin with a throw of 35.53m.
Robert Nagle of Leevale AC came a strong 2nd in the Long Jump jumping
5.38m well ahead of the rest of the field.
Matthew Ahern Ford of Abbey Striders also did well in the High Jump
coming 2nd ousting D. Power of Tralee of the silver medal position with is
clearance of 1.57m. Lee Curley of
Youghal AC won the Pole Vault in CIT in this age group (2.20m)
Girls 16 -Track Events
Grainne Moynihan of W. Muskerry and Jessica Sheehan of
R/Kinsale gave outstanding performances in very competitive events and both
featured in medal positions on more than one occasion. In the 80mh when a CBC was achieved by Sara
Lavin of Emerald Grainne Moynihan stormed in to take the bronze medal in a time
of 12.54 just behind Megan Kiely of Ferrybank.
in the 100m Jessica and Grainne battled it out for the silver medal
position behind Sara Lavin; it was Jessica who pipped Grainne on the line in a
thrilling final; Jessica's time was 12.80 and Grainne's time was 12.81. Phil Healy of Bandon AC also did well in this
event finishing 4th in a time of 13.30.
In the 200m Grainne Moynihan came 2nd in a time of 26.45 followed by
Jessica Sheehan in a time of 26.52.
Claire O' Brien of BIAC finished 4th in the 1500m in a time of 5.23.42
also qualifying for the All Irelands.
Girls 16 - Field Events
Bandon AC, Youghal AC, BIAC and Abbey Striders AC all
featured strongly in the throwing events.
In the Javelin Jenny Murphy of Abbey Striders AC won the Munster title
throwing 32.10m and Patricia Curtin form Youghal AC won the silver medal with
her throw of 28.50m. Niamh Murphy of
BIAC had a big throw of 11.25m in the Shot winning the Gold Medal. Lynn Bradfield of Bandon AC came 4th throwing
9.72m. Naimh Murphy of BIAC came 2nd in
the Hammer throwing 33.65m and 4th in the Discus with her throw of 24.22m. Lynn Bradfield came 3rd in the Discus
throwing 25.36m.
The Long Jump also had a thrilling finish with Jessica Sheehan
narrowly beating Sara Lavin to win the Munster title jumping 5.21. Grainne Moynihan came 4th in this event being
narrowly beaten by April Flynn of Ferrybank who cleared 5.04m ahead of her.
Well done to all the U/16 Girls on both track and field
who gave such outstanding and thrilling performances!
Boys 16- Track Events
Togher AC, Leevale AC and Bandon Ac did very well in the
Hurdles, middle distance and walks. Eric
Stam of Bandon AC won the 100MH in a
time of 15.62 just beating Daire Walsh whose time was 15.67. Eric Stam came 4th in the 100m. Luke Hickey of Leevale AC came in a strong
place in the 250mh just behind Ben Kiely of Ferrybank. Luke also won the 3000m walk. Togher AC excelled in the middle distance
with placings in the 800m, Ian Hartnertt 3rd in a time of 2.11.46, the 1500m,
Ian Hartnett 1st in a time of 4.26.75 and Emmet Bracken 3rd in a time of
4.28.39, the 3000m, Andrew O' Keefe 2nd in a time of 10.22.96. The relays saw Leevale and Bandon to the fore
with Leevale winning in a time of 49.7 just ahead of Bandon 49.93
Boys 16 - Field Events
Bandon AC, Midleton AC and Liscarroll AC all featured in
the throwing events. The Discus
competition saw 3 Cork lads in the top 4. Eric Stam came 2nd (37.51m), Michael
McSweeney, Midleton AC came 3rd (34.09m) and Daire Harrington, Bandon AC came
4th (24.93m). Daire Harrington came 2nd
in the Hammer with his throw of 19.78m.
Eric Stam won the javelin with a huge throw of 44.54m. Daire Walsh came 2nd with a throw of 36.53m
and James Kelly, Liscarroll came 3rd with his best throw of 24.11m. Michael McSweeney came 2nd in the Shot
throwing 10.51m and Daire Harrington of Bandon came 3rd with a throw of
9.54m. Daire Walsh won the Long Jump
with a great jump of 5.72m; Shane Howard of Bandon AC came in a strong 3rd
place jumping 5.35m and Kevin Garcia of
Leevale finished in 4th place jumping 5.09m jusy ahead of his clubmate Ryan
Casey. Youghal's Adam Ahearne came 4th
in the Triple Jump (10.57m) narrowly beaten by the West Waterford athlete. The High Jump was totally dominated by Cork
athletes, 1st Eric Stam, Bandon AC (1.73m), 2nd Daire Walsh (1.65m), 3rd Shane
Howard, Bandon (1.65m), 4th Kevin Garcia, Leevale (1.65m). Shane Howard came 4th in the Pole Vault
competition in Cork (2.60m)
Girls 17 - Track Events
Rebecca Corbett of Leevale AC and Christine and Jessica
Neville of BIAC all featured in medal positions. Rebecca came 2nd in the 100m in a time of
13.09 and came 3rd in the 200m in a time of 26.88 thus qualifying in two
events. Christine Neville came 2nd in
the 200m in a time of 26.82 and she won gold in the 300m in a time of
42.79. Her sister Jessica came 2nd in
the 300m in a time of 44.27.
Girls 17 - Field Events
Rebecca Mulligan of BIAC, Tracey Bradfield of Bandon AC
and Megan Moynihan of W. Muskerry featured in the throwing events. Tracey came 2nd in the Discus throwing
30.56m. Megan won the Hammer event
throwing 34.32m and came 2nd in the Shot with her throw of 9.87m just ahead of
Rebecca Mulligan (8.69m) in 3rd place.
Orla Nash of R/Kinsale came 3rd in the Long Jump jumping 5.12m.
Boys 17 - Track Events
Dean Cronin of BIAC did magnificently well to win the
Munster titles in the 400m (52.85) and the 800m in a time of 2.00.26 which are
very good times. Eoin Casey of Midleton
Unfinished 4th in the 800m (2.08.08) and in the 1500m (4.25.90). Danny Mullins of Bantry AC came 3rd in the
1500m in a time of 4.23.85. Togher AC
athletes P. Coleman finished 2nd in the gruelling 1500m S/C in very warm
conditions in a time of 4.54.03 and M. Seary finished in bronze medal position
in a time of 5.09.69. Colm Lynch of
Togher AC came 3rd in the 3000m walk.
Dara Kenny of BIAC finished 4th in the 400m in a time of 54.27 and Spike
Shaughnessy from Bandon AC came 2nd in the 200m; his time was 24.35.
Boys 17 - Field Events
Midleton AC and Bandon AC also dominated the throwing
events which were family orientated.
Mark Sugrue of Bandon AC won the silver medal in the Discus 33.65m and
Patrick McSweeney of Bandon AC came 3rd 32.67m.
Patrick's sister Laura won the G/15 Shot and Hammer. Patrick also came 3rd in the Hammer 29.36
just beating Diarmuid Hallahan of Midleton AC into 4th place with his throw of
26.61. His sister Aideen also featured
in the G/14 Shot and Discus. Diarmuid
also came 4th in the javelin 27.93m.
Patrick McSweeney won the Shot with a good throw of 13.84m. Diarmuid Hallahan came 3rd (10.61m) and Gregory Campbell of Ballincollig
AC came 4th (10.34m).
Girls U/18- Track Events
Orla Finn of R/Kinsale had a good win in the 100mh in a
good time of 15.79. ahead of the two Carrick-on-Suir athletes. S he also won the 300mh in a time of
46.67. Nikita Savage of Youghal AC who has already won the Pole Vault (3.30m)
held in CIT in June, came 4th in the 100m in a time of 13.77 amd 3rd in the
300m in a time of 44.41. Kate Humphries
of Leevale AC came 2nd in the 300mh in a time of 47.70. Eimear Kelly from Youghal AC has also
featured in a medal position in the Pole Vault in CIT in June when she came 2nd
with her jump of 2.20m.
Girls 18 - Field Events
Jean McSweeney of Midleton AC came 3rd in the Discus
throwing 21.39m; Alva Motherway of Midleton came 3rd in the Hammer event with
her throw of 22.06m. Nikita Savage of
Youghal AC finished 4th in the javelin and 3rd in the Long Jump jumping 4.76m.
Boys 18 - Track Events
It was Leevale AC who dominated in the sprinting events
and Togher AC in the Middle distance events in this age group from the Cork
clubs. Patrick Maher of Leevale AC won
three Munster titles, 400mh in a time of 54.88, 200m in a time of 23.43, and the 400m in a time of 51.47. He was narrowly pipped by Nathan Jage of
Dooneen(11.72) in the 100m: Patrick's time was 11.76. David Killeen of Leevale AC came 3rd in the
100m (11.96) and 3rd in the 200m (23.80).
In the 800m Brian Murray, Togher came 3rd (2.03.73) and his clubmate
Peter Hanrahan came 4th (2.06.31). Brian Murray came 3rd in the 1500m in a time
of 4.27.48. Robert O' Shea of Togher AC
came 2nd in the 3000m in a time of 10.10.25.
Boys 18 - Field Events
Diarmuid Hickey of R/Kinsale had two wins in the throwing
events. He won the Discus with a great
throw of 37.44m and the Shot throwing 13.58m.
In the Shot also Michael Leahy of
Midleton came 3rd with his throw of 11.41m.
Michael also came 3rd in the Hammer (39.08m). David Reynolds of Bandon AC had a huge throw
of 49.86m javelin to win the Munster title in this competion. Diarmuid Hickey of R/Kinsale came 3rd with his throw of 39.35m. Diarmuid also came 3rd in the Long Jump
(5.78m) and Alex McDonald of Liscarroll AC came 4th in the High Jump clearing
1.50m.
Unfortunately numbers were very scarce in the U/19 age
groups. Carraig na bhFear had one
athlete Jonathon Murphy in the B/19 Hammer who came 2nd with a throw of 30.80m.
Well done to all our Cork athletes who competed and
congratulations to those who qualified to compete in the All Irelands in
Tullamore on 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th July.

Ireland website refer to the competition booklet. Our U/12 and U/13 boys and girls who
qualified from Templemore will also be competing with
the older age groups in Tullamore.

June 7/8 Munster Championships U/9 to U/13.
The Munster Track and Field
Championships were held in Templemore Athletic Track on Saturday 6th and Sunday
7th June. The U/9, U/10 and U/11 Girls
and Boys 2 x competitions were held in conjunction with the Boys and Girls U/12
and U/13 individual events. Weather
conditions were atrocious on Saturday with very strong winds and torrential
showers throughout the late afternoon making condtions impossible for the
athletes to compete especially in the B/13 Javelin and relays which had to be
run off on times. Congratulations to all
the Cork juveniles who gave superb performances and also to those who did not
feature in the medals but as usual standards were very high.
TRACK - U/12 and U/13
Cork athletes had some
outstanding runs on in the 60m and 600m with 12 qualifying for the All Irelands
in Tullamore next July. Three athletes
qualify from the 600m and 4 from the 60m sprint. It was encouraging to see Cork athletes
featuring not only in medal positions but also to have strong representation in
the finals. The track events were of a
very high standard and there were some outstanding performances experienced and
very fast times achieved. Well done to
all!

Again Cork clubs were to the
fore in the jumping and throwing events with three boys achieving qualification
for the All Irelands in the B/12 Long Jump in very strong competition and all
lads achieving 4 metres and over and two
boys in the B/12 High Jump both from Abbey Striders club. Likewise three girls have qualified in the 12
and 13 age groups in the High Jump.
Youghal and Midleton excelled in the Javelin events with four
qualifications arising from two competitions.
Liscarroll Midleton and Fanahan McSweeney were all successful in the
Shot Putt.

Tuesday 10th June.
The U/12 and U/13 boys and
girls and relays that have qualified will be competing in Tullamore on Day 1
and Day 2 of the All Irelands on 11th and 12th July. A schedule of events for both of these days is
available on the Athletics Ireland website.

U/14 to U/19 age group in the meantime are preparing for their Munsters which
will be held on 20th and 21st June in Waterford. Good luck also to all athletes who are
finalising their Junior and Leaving Cert exams.
