Courses
25k Route
The 25K run will start at 9:30am on Centre Park Road, approx. 1km
away from last year's start, and then heads down the Marina, along the
Blackrock-Lakelands walkway, before rejoining and following the old
railway line that skirts the shores of Cork Harbour. The race will
finish in Carrigaline in the car park on the Currabinny Road, directly
opposite the entrance to Carrigaline Community Centre.
10k Route
The 10K run will be held on the same day along the latter part of the
same route with a separate start in Monkstown at 11:00am, and also
finish in Carrigaline in the car park on the Currabinny Road, directly
opposite the entrance to Carrigaline Community Centre.
5K Route
This year, the 5K run/walk will start in Ringaskiddy, at 11:45am
and finish in Carrigaline in the car park on the Currabinny Road,
directly opposite the entrance to Carrigaline Community Centre.
Transport will be provided for runners from
Carrigaline to Cork and Monkstown before and after the 10K/25K races.
Please indicate your transport requirements on the entry form. Where
possible, participants are encouraged to provide their own transport as
places are limited. See the FAQ page on The Great Railway Run website for more information.

Organisers Note to Runners
The Great Railway Run 2016
Welcome to the fifth Great Railway Run which set to be our biggest yet
and thank you for your entry. This is entirely a charitable event
and the main beneficiary of this run has been the Carrigaline Youth
centre which was opened during the year.
Route Changes:
The finish area has been changed from last year to the youth centre to
eliminate some of the issues that were identified from last years
survey of runners. As a result the start lines and routes have been
changed since last year. The 25K start is now further along Centre Park
Rd near the marina and the 10K start is also closer to Carrigaline. The
10K holding area remains the same (the car park opposite the Bosun) to
avoid obstructing the 25K runners. Runners will be requested to remain
in this area until about 5-10 minutes before the start. A warm-up jog
of 900m to the start and then off. At the grotto in Shanbally
instead of turning right the route for the 10K and 25K will take
you down Barnahely hill behind Novartis and then right on main
Ringaskiddy to Carrigaline Road. At this junction you will merge with
5K runners who will start in Ringaskiddy rather than Shanbally again to
minimise disruption to other runners. The routes will be well
signposted so don’t worry if you are not familiar with the area.
Registration:
If you wish to avoid the queues and hassle on the morning of the race
and give yourself an opportunity to arrive later we will be giving a
pre-registration option from 6pm until 8 p.m. on the evening of
Saturday 18th April at Phelans midnight pharmacy at the Kinsale Road
Roundabout. We would encourage you to do this if convenient as it makes
it easier for us all and ensures we can start on time as we have done
every year.
Buses
Although we intent running an efficient bus service we encourage
runners to organise their own transport where possible. If
travelling with others consider leaving one car in Carrigaline and then
bringing one to the start. Times and location of buses to the
start are published on the website . Please read FAQs.
T-Shirts
If you bought a T-Shirt this will be supplied at registration. If you
do not want it until later simply send it down with in baggage van to
the finish. A small number of T-Shirts will be available for sale at
pre-registration on the Saturday.
Water stations:
The water stations will be located at 7km,11km,14km, 18km and
22km. Isotonic drinks will be available at the 14km station also.
Monkstown – congestion
We would ask those gathering at the start of the 10K to be mindful of
and support any 25K runners coming through and be careful not to hinder
any runners progress. Marshals will be on hand to assist.
Race numbers and shoulder stickers
You will be given your race number to put on your front as normal. In
addition you will be given a smaller sign that you pin on the back
of your right shoulder. This signifies whether you are running
5k, 10K and 25K and should be worn as a courtesy to your fellow
runners. You will also be given a number for your baggage if needed and
this will be transported to the finish area.
No shortcuts
For 25k runners, note at Blackrock castle the correct route is to
proceed along the roadway and not down the steps. Marshalls will be on
hand to advise.
Open roads
The route is partially run on roads that remain open to traffic. This
is important to be aware of between Monkstown and Shanbally and
in Passage. Please ensure for your safety and the safety of others that
you do not cross the centre line of the road between Monkstown (15K)
and Shanbally (20K) at any stage. When rounding the roundabout at
Shanbally (you will be turning right) do so as traffic would – keep
left and go around as traffic would.
Personal audio devices
The use of personal audio devices is prohibited on the public roads
NO Showers
Please note there are NO SHOWER facilities at the youth centre. There
will be massage/therapy in the youth centre as well as soup and
sandwiches
Marshalls will be on hand to assist and do not hesitate to advise them if you need assistance. Please follow their directions.
And most of all enjoy the views, enjoy the forecasted cool, dry and bright weather and have a great day!
