Sprint Relay Workshop - University of Limerick
10am - 1pm, Saturday November 25th 2018
Relays are an excellent way of creating a team environment among club members and athletes. While athletics is often an individual sport, relay teams , and their associated programmes, develop other skills, such as teamwork, building relationships, and communication amongst athletes. Relays have the ability to encourage both competitive and recreational athletes, and, in turn, makes clubs more engaging and sustainable
Relays also adhere to Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) strategies. For example, in recent seasons, the national relay programme has made tremendous progress. The 2018 season alone saw six national teams compete at major championships, and three National Records were set by the Under-20 Women’s 4x100m, Under-20 Men’s 4x100m and Senior Women’s 4x100m
The Under-20 women’s 4x100m also created history in 2018, claiming a world championship silver medal, Ireland’s first global outdoor relay medal
We are delighted to have this relay workshop lead and delivered by Karen Kirk, who has guided the Irish women's 4x100m relay team to a silver medal at the World Under-20 championships
Karen has worked with relays, from youth to senior level, and encourages those coaching relays at club and schools level to attend this workshop
This workshop will look closely at the basics of coaching sprint relays including:
* 4x100m and 4x200m
* Baton exchange technique
* Squad drills
* Exchange zones
* Check marks
