He started and finished the day with a win on the second day of decathlon action at the #EYOF2019 👊 🇮🇪🇮🇪#TeamIreland’s Diarmuid O’Connor won the final 1500km in the Decathlon. Sean Maher (Hammer)
Hammer Thrower Sean Maher had to settle for 13th in his event, throwing 56.48m, outside his personal best. “I’m severely disappointed. I knew I could perform a lot better than 56m – that’s 12m off what I know what I can throw. But when you’re here you need to compete with the big boys – you need to get a throw in in the first three, or you’re not going anywhere.
“I take so much with me, simple things that you can take to the next step, and it really helps you bring up your game. I definitely want to come back – the World Under-20s are in Kenya next year, that’s where I know I’m going to show out.”
Diarmuid O'Connor - Bandon AC
Report from Frank Stam, Bandon AC - Diarmuid's Coach
There was some confusion after Diarmuid's decathlon - Even the camera man got it wrong. Diarmuid won the final event, the 1500m, and cameraman kept chasing him, while Diarmuid went about congratulating the medal winners who already had flags around their necks.
Diarmuid was a bit unsettled for both the 100m and Long Jump, but scored a little above PB level. Then his mood fell with Shot Put that was almost 2m down on his PB. However there was a long break after the Shot, and he came back strongly with a new spirit, and jumped five consecutive High Jump PB's.
In the 400m, he probably went out bit too fast, in Lane 7, however his time was very close to a PB. His score after Day 1 was 3569 points. Day 1 ended with 6th place, from 16 participants, which was a happy surprise. The challenge was to not drift out of top 10 the next day.
Day 2 started with a bang, when he won the 110 hurdles, in 14.27 sec - His PB had been 14.45 sec.
This was worth 940 points, and this became the highest score for this decathlon for all athletes. He was on a roll and continued, adding almost 2m to his Discus PB. He then added almost 5m to his Javelin PB. This was followed up when he equalled his Pole Vault PB.
He won the 1500m in a time just 2 seconds over his PB, but still fast enough to break the National Outdoor Youth Decathlon record with a total of 6792 points, 40 points more than Daniel Ryan scored in EYOF Tbilisi, in 2016.
Overall Diarmuid had 6 PB's in all, and retained his 6th place from day 1. Compared to the athletes who finished above him, who have more balanced scores, for the future, Diarmuid still has two events that he can work, on to catch up with them.
Aoife O’Sullivan - Liscarroll AC
Aoife O’Sullivan qualifies for High Jump Final with a first time clearance at 1.75m
