European Championship Record and Silver for Niamh McCarthy
Niamh McCarthy, Eagle AC, representing Ireland at the IPC European Paralympic Championships, in Grosetto, Italy, claimed the Silver medal, behind Poland's Renata Sliwinska, in an extremely competitive competition, during which Niamh twice broke the European F41 record.
The Championship is decided on a point basis, so while Niamh was in the F41 category, the Polish athlete was competing in the F40 category, so Niamh required a considerably longer throw to overcome the Pole.
Niamh threw a European record of 25.45m in Round 2, and improved this by a huge margin, in Round 3, to another European Record of 27:05m, which put her into the lead. Niamh's fourth round throw was 26.98m , however the points system put the Pole back in the lead, by 15 points.
The final standings saw Renata Sliwinska, Poland, take Gold, with a throw of 16.78m, earning her 848 points, while Niamh's 27.05m earned her the Silver, just 17 points behind the Gold Medal performance.
