It has been quite a summer so far for Irish athletics with several long-standing national records broken, along with a number of outstanding individual performances
As a result, some athletes maybe haven’t got the publicity they deserve. One such athlete is Youghal’s Fearghal Curtin, of whom it could be said, has certainly fallen under the radar. Fearghal recently represented Ireland on two occasions, finishing third in the European Team 5000m, in Poland, on June 3rd, which followed on from an 18th position in a high-class European Team Cup 10,000m, in France, a couple of weeks before
Although both were tactical races, in the latter he still managed to record a season’s best of 28:44.31. Over 5000m at the Morton Games in Dublin, just over a week ago, Fearghal - proudly wearing his Youghal colours - finished sixth, in a personal best of 13:34.44, improving on the 13:35.06 he ran in the US, in April of last year
But arguably his most impressive performance came at the BMC Meet 3000m in Watford, on July 1st, when he finished fourth in an elite field, in a time of 7:50.00. This places him top of the Irish rankings over the distance for 2023, marginally ahead of the new national 1500m record-holder, Andrew Coscoran
This is all off the back of an intensive training programme as he prepares for his marathon debut in the autumn. In the meantime, the intermediate goal is the Antrim International Half-Marathon which takes place on August 27th
Back home in Killeagh for a few weeks, where he celebrated his 25th birthday with parents Noel and Geraldine, and sister Trish, on Friday last, Fearghal made the short journey to Ballycotton for a training session
The workout consisted of eight alternative ‘hard and less-hard’ kilometres, over the famous 10-mile course, in an average of around three minutes. Not alone did he accomplish this, but his time over the historic route was an awe-inspiring 48:33. Yes, that’s 48 minutes and 33 seconds
To put that into perspective, the National 10-mile in the Phoenix Park, on Sunday last, was won by John Travis, in 49:57, and no Irish runner has broken 49 minutes for the distance this year. Also, for the statistically-minded, 48:33 would have won 24 of the 40 Ballycotton ‘10’ races, which took place between 1978 and 2017
Suffice to say, Fearghal Curtin’s initial appearances over both the half and full marathon distances in the coming months will certainly be awaited with anticipation
